West Nile Virus is a mosquito-borne virus first identified in Uganda in 1937. Since then, it has spread globally with outbreaks in Algeria, Romania and the Western Hemisphere.

As of October 2014, a total of 47 states and the District of Columbia have reported West Nile virus infections in people, birds, or mosquitoes, according to PCT Online. Out of the 1,444 cases of West Nile virus disease reported in people, 57% (830 cases) were classified as neuroinvasive disease (such as meningitis or encephalitis) and 43% (614 cases) were non-neuroinvasive disease.
