Honey Bees

Honey bees were first introduced to Australia by early settlers for honey production, but escaped populations are now found across the country.

They measure around 1.3–1.6mm, with distinctive yellow and black markings. While essential pollinators for many plant species, honey bees can pose risks when they build hives in or around homes and businesses. Nests are often hidden in cavities or sheltered spaces, and increased bee activity in one area is usually a sign of a nearby colony.

Each colony consists of three castes: the queen, male drones and female worker bees. Queens can live up to five years, while workers survive only six weeks and drones die shortly after mating. Colonies are highly protective of their hives, and worker bees will sting aggressively when they feel threatened.

Honey bee stings

Only worker bees sting, and the act is fatal for them. A sting causes immediate pain and swelling, and in allergic individuals can trigger severe reactions, including anaphylaxis. Ice, antihistamines and compression can help manage mild stings, but medical attention is critical if symptoms worsen or breathing becomes difficult.
