Can I Stay Home During Pest Control Treatment?

Sometimes, you can stay home during pest control treatment, but it depends on the treatment method, products used, areas being treated and the technician’s instructions. There is no single stay-out rule that applies to every pest treatment.

Can You Stay Home During Pest Control?

In some situations, occupants can remain at home while a technician treats specific areas. However, other treatments may require people to leave temporarily.

The important question is not simply whether pest control is being performed. Instead, ask what treatment is being used, where it will be applied and what the product instructions require.

For example, pest treatments can include targeted sprays, baits, dusts or other application methods. Victorian health guidance notes that different cockroach control methods can be used depending on the situation, with products requiring use according to label directions.

When Might You Need to Leave?

You may need to leave when the treatment instructions require restricted access to the treated area or property.

    This can depend on:

Therefore, never assume that the stay-out period from one pest treatment applies to another.

When Can You Usually Remain at Home?

Some targeted treatments may allow occupants to remain elsewhere in the property while the technician works.

For example, if only a particular area requires treatment, the technician may provide instructions about avoiding that area during the service.

However, the exact arrangement should always come from the pest professional carrying out the treatment.

What Should You Do Before the Technician Arrives?

Good preparation can make the treatment easier and safer.

    Before the appointment:

    1. Ask whether you need to leave.
    1. Ask which areas will be treated.
    1. Follow the preparation instructions.
    1. Remove or protect food as instructed.
    1. Clear access to treatment areas.
    1. Keep children and pets away from restricted areas.

If you are unsure about any instruction, ask before the treatment starts.

How Long Do You Need to Stay Out?

There is no standard stay-out period for all pest control services.

The appropriate re-entry period depends on the treatment and product instructions. Your technician should tell you when it is appropriate to return to treated areas.

This is particularly important because different pest problems may require completely different treatment methods.

    What Happens After Pest Control?

After treatment, follow the technician’s instructions carefully.

    You may receive advice about:

It is suggested to not remove, wash or disturb treated areas unless instructed to do so.
