Future of Fruit Flies
Fruit Flies
US fruit fly entomologist, Eric Jang, has 32 year experience working with the US Department of Agriculture to manage four exotic fruit fly species in Hawaii and California.
Dr Jang spoke with 35 local fruit growers, providing them with insights in the management of Queensland fruit flies. He underlines the worldwide trend of a decreased usage in pesticides and the increasing reliance on integrated pest management.
The new sterile insect technique releases large numbers of sterile flies into orchards where mating with wild flies results in no offspring being produced. There will be a dramatic reduction of larvae in crops, allowing local eradication of the pest. This promising new technique will suppress and potentially eradicate the Queensland fruit flies.
